Cobalt as Coast Guard Auxiliary

Hi Everyone,

Three years ago, I posted a comment and photo about a 1977 18′ bowrider I had just purchased in Illinois.  At the time, the boat had just 150 total hours.  In the subsequent three summers, I’ve added slightly more than 70 hours, mostly doing Coast Guard Auxiliary patrols on the local lakes.  The old gal still looks and runs like new.  Read moreRead more

Welcome Phil Wotherspoon and His 1977 Cobalt Bowrider

Hello!

My name is Phil Wotherspoon and I live by the lake at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.

I’m 24 and I work at a boat dealership called Bill’s Marine Service.

One of the salesmen had an old Cobalt that had sunk (the bolts for the swim platform had worn their holes big) and he just didn’t have the time to deal with it. I bought it from him for a very small amount and have begun the process of refurbishing the interior.

It is a 1977 Cobalt bowrider. The paint on it is only two years old and the engine still purrs like a very loud kitten. The upholstery in the interior was a wreck. It was quite beat up, torn and smelled pretty bad.

As of today, 6/17, I have the interior completely torn out all the way down to the carpet (which is the next thing to go). I’m documenting the progress in pictures if you would like to see! Working at a dealership is a big advantage in this boat “flip” because of all the spare parts lying around.

My design for the restoration introduces the styling and features of the new Cobalts with my own little twist. I didn’t really like the layout how it was because of all the wasted space. She is now named the Phoenix now for obvious reasons, haha.

I would love to be a member of your club! I had plans on selling the boat when I was finished but now that I’m really developing the idea I will probably just keep it!

This process will be a good stepping stone as the dealership has about 6 more Cobalts of the same era just waiting for the same TLC. I have my own little cottage industry!

Hope to hear from you!  unclecat@hotmail.com

“Brand New” 1977 Cobalt 18BR

Hello,  I am the proud new owner of a brand new 1977 Cobalt 18BR bowrider, with an incredible 150 total hours of use since new!  I purchased this magnificent boat from the original owner last week in Illinois.  I won’t tell you the price because you’d cry.  Quite literally, this boat is about as close to perfect in every way as a 31-year old boat could possibly be.  Even the gel coat on the hull shines like new.

In order to transfer the title from Illinois to Ohio, I need to find the motor number on the 235 hp 351W Ford V8.  Do you have any idea where this number would be located?  Hopefully, it’s not down somewhere on the bottom of the block.  It is my intention to enjoy this boat to the fullest, and show it in antique boat shows here in the Akron area, parking it proudly next to the $100,000 restorations of wooden Chris-Crafts, Lymans and Centurys.  As in the collector car world, I’ll proudly proclaim it an “unrestored original”.  I’ve attached a photo of the boat as it appeared when the sale was completed, and I’ll send more photos along as soon as the new registration and a spring clean-up are completed.

Can you also provide me information on joining the Cobalt Owner’s Club.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

John R. Smith, Division Vice Commander, US Coast Guard (Aux), Akron, OH

Cobalt Enthusiast Seeks Model

Hello,

I am looking for some assistance in identifying a particular Cobalt model. It was an 18′ – 19′ boat produced in the late 70′s early 80′s. This particular model was unique with a 1 piece curved windshield, and a really cool “rumble seat” on the bow that when folded over was a handsome teak feature on the bow. The interior had the shift and throttle levers in the center like a car. The boat was powered with an inboard-outboard powerplant.
If anyone has any information or if you can point me towards a source of information I would be greatful.
Thank you for your help !!
