“Brand New” 1977 Cobalt 18BR

Hello,  I am the proud new owner of a brand new 1977 Cobalt 18BR bowrider, with an incredible 150 total hours of use since new!  I purchased this magnificent boat from the original owner last week in Illinois.  I won’t tell you the price because you’d cry.  Quite literally, this boat is about as close to perfect in every way as a 31-year old boat could possibly be.  Even the gel coat on the hull shines like new.

In order to transfer the title from Illinois to Ohio, I need to find the motor number on the 235 hp 351W Ford V8.  Do you have any idea where this number would be located?  Hopefully, it’s not down somewhere on the bottom of the block.  It is my intention to enjoy this boat to the fullest, and show it in antique boat shows here in the Akron area, parking it proudly next to the $100,000 restorations of wooden Chris-Crafts, Lymans and Centurys.  As in the collector car world, I’ll proudly proclaim it an “unrestored original”.  I’ve attached a photo of the boat as it appeared when the sale was completed, and I’ll send more photos along as soon as the new registration and a spring clean-up are completed.

Can you also provide me information on joining the Cobalt Owner’s Club.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

John R. Smith, Division Vice Commander, US Coast Guard (Aux), Akron, OH

I was just wondering if you have ever seen a 1969 Cobalt outboard before? I have bought one that the cobalt “historian” said to be possibly the last one in the world. He said that they only made a few of them in 1968 and 69 with outboard cutouts. I didn’t know if by chance you have seen one or maybe new someone who has. I am trying to find out what they looked like new. This one needs a lot of work. If you could help that would be great.

i recently inherited a 1973 18ft cobalt bowrider from my grandpa who passed away in 1985. He purchased the boat in 1974 or 75, it originally had a 307ci chevy engine that the block had froze. he pulled the engine, found a 1968 327ci chevy eng block and put the original heads, carb, etc to convert it to a marine engine. the boat had sat in a garage for 14 years and needs a little work. it has an OMC Jet Drive. i need a fuel tank, drivers side window, and just a few other small things but i cant find anything for this boat. i would really like to have this boat back on the water. if anyone can help me please drop me a line. thank you
